Chronic Nasal Discharge In A Dog
by CorinneC - October 11, 2017    View Case Report
Last Spring Karma started sneezing, similar to a reverse sneeze, no discharge noted at that time except for maybe a fine spray when sneezing. All else was normal (pulses toned, tongue pink, wet, spirits good) with her so I put her on San Ren Tang for Wind Damp Invasion but the sneezing progressed and by July she was having difficulty breathing through her left nasal passage and had thick mucoid exudate. She was in Kelowna BC and went for a CT scan and biopsy there - left nasal passage was obstructed by a mass, diagnosed with chronic plasmacytic rhinitis, mycoplasma neg. Specialist was not convinced that she obtained a sufficient sample to biopsy and still thought Karma had cancer. It was recommended to put her on prednisone and enrofloxacin for 3-4 weeks and see if the rhinitis cleared. All was well for 1 week after meds finished and then Karma began to snuffle, mucoid exudate, still BAR though. Owner has not brought Karma to me but has asked for referrals to you and our Calgary specialists - specialists are wanting to redo CT scan and biopsy. She spoke with Karin by phone about Karma last week.

I think by now with a mass obstructing the left nasal passage that we are dealing with Blood stagnation so I would like to start her on Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang, Hoxsey, and Vit A & D. Owner wants to have me confirm with you as she has spent a great deal of money and time to help her dog.

I think that's a fine place to start

Alternatively, try only antibiotics and see if that has the same benefits as last time. If so, then we know to focus on her immunity, using perhaps something like Xiao Chai Hu Tang, maybe modified with some herbs to address the sinuses. Overall, though, a steady worsening during the summer solstice suggests congestion, and XFZYT with Hoxsey should reduce that
