Question Details
Sou Quan Wan
by lsargent - April 14, 2009
I recently received an email about this formula that is being used in an older spayed Irish Wolfhound for urinary incontinence. How may I learn more about the formula and its uses?
Thanks,

Hi Lois,

Suo Quan Wan should be in most formula references. The translation is 'Shut the Sluice' powder. It is commonly combined with Sang Piao Xiao San for best results. It contains Yi Zhi Ren (Alpinia), Wu Yao (Lindera) and Shan Yao (Dioscorea), and is used for urinary incontinence in geriatric Kidney deficient animals. Alpinia seems to confer a lot of its efficacy, but it's not clear how it works. In fact, you'd almost expect it would have the opposite effect by the research that has been done on it, but it seems to work. Its Alpinia cousins contain some phytosterols which can have an estrogenic effect, so maybe that will end up being the mechanism. Otherwise, it can work to relieve urinary urgency from urethrospasm.

It's only one way to address incontinence. There are many others. You can read more about the formula in Bensky and Barolet's Formulas and Strategies.
